Challenging times demand challenging measures. In 2010 when the economy continued to dip and CSC was serving more and more people in poverty, with less and less funding to do so, we knew we needed to get creative.
After some fundraising research, with the help of two wonderful VISTA Volunteers, we decided on a relay. The success of relay runs in Oregon is well known. We polled the running clubs and every runner we could find and they kept shouting “Do it – a back country, one-day relay from the wine country to the coast is what we need!” We listened.
Shortly afterwards, our fearless team of would-be race leaders wandered through the wine country west of Philomath plotting a course. We stumbled upon our Starting Line Sponsor, Harris Bridge Vineyard. As soon as we saw their little winery nestled close to the Harris Covered Bridge, we knew this was the place! We followed rolling country roads winding our way to the Yaquina River, and followed it our Finish Line Sponsor, Rogue Ales Brewery on Newport’s South Beach Marina and so the Barrel to Keg was born!
Get it? Wine barrel to beer keg. We thought it was a cute name. Our CSC Board members were not so sure at first...the runners loved it and the word got out!
The board reluctantly trusted our instinct and in year three of this event, we have more than tripled the number of runners and added a walking section. The Barrel to Keg draws people from all over Oregon, five neighboring states, Canada, and even Hawaii!

Goodie Bag Items (1,200 each) – We want the Barrel to Keg to be memorable and keep people coming back, and also getting out to our sponsors' businesses. A great way to do this is through giveaway items placed in the runners/walkers goodie bags! Your business’ giveaway items and special value coupons provide added value to their entry fee. Items such as Advil, lip balm, band-aids, hand sanitizers, chocolate, lanyards, energy bars, yo-yos and other fun items with your company's logo are always a big hit.
The Race Committee needs volunteers to help with tasks before the race, debrief after the race and on-going planning and preparation activities.
